AN ON-GOING DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY

“Managing a Grand Site means implementing on-going development principles in a tangible way”.

The aim is to protect and restore this emblematic landscape by controlling the number of visitors. This will allow tourists and locals to discover everything the site has to offer and to organise positive spin-offs for the local economy. These are the ambitions of the Grand Site “Puy Mary - Volcan du Cantal” project.

This strategy is the key to achieving a better environmental, social and economic balance for the site and adjacent valleys.

As such, the Grand Site du Puy Mary, along with seven other French territories, is taking part in research based on lasting Tourism. Organised by the Agence Française d’Ingénierie Touristique (AFIT), it primarily aims at developing new practices, encouraging the diversity of players and promoting the territory's assets.
A programme of operations was validated in November 2003 by the Comité Syndical du Puy Mary. It consists of many operations that are essential to the success of the Grand Site project, concerning either the listed site, discovery and escapism, or the valleys, revitalisation of the territory.

All the operations will take into account the exceptional character of the Massif du Puy Mary (nature, countryside, heritage, spirit of the site, etc.) and its inhabitants.
A follow-up Committee, made up of the Grand Site’s main partners has also been created so as to follow through with implementation, assessment of operations undertaken and if need be, to suggest improvements to the programme. The Conseil de Développement, which plays a consultancy role, should also actively take part in this follow-up and assessment approach. Public debates staged during the project development phase will continue to forge bonds between the Grand Site management structure and the local population as a whole.
